The Romanian Intelligence Service is the official institution of the Romanian state with competences in gathering and making effective use of national security-related intelligence. The activities are carried out mainly on the national territory but also outside Romania's borders, in cooperation with other institutions with responsibilities in the field of monitoring and preventing cross-border threats.

The Romanian Intelligence Service plans and carries out activities aimed at gathering, verifying and processing the information necessary for identifying, preventing and countering actions which may legally constitute threats to Romania’s national security.

Romania's EU and NATO membership implies taking on additional responsibilities and the conceptual and functional adjustment of the Romanian Intelligence Service, in terms of Romania's connection to the dynamics of these organizations, in which security is indivisible and jointly ensured.

In the context of the unpredictable developments of the international security environment, also with an impact on Romania’s national security, as well as of the globalization of threats, the Romanian Intelligence Service has developed and extended international cooperation ties with 100 intelligence and security organisations in over 60 countries.

Equally, the Romanian Intelligence Service has had a clearly defined role and tried to set a highly dynamic pace to its contribution to the process of ensuring regional, European and Euro-Atlantic security, through an active involvement in the multilateral international cooperation frameworks.

Also, the Romanian Intelligence Service carries out activities aimed at protecting the state secret and preventing the leakage of intelligence that, according to the law, cannot be made public.
